Over Batja Mesquita

Batja Mesquita is sociaal psycholoog, emotie-onderzoeker en pionier op het gebied van culturele psychologie. Ze is hoogleraar psychologie aan de Katholieke Universiteit van Leuven, en directeur van het Centrum voor Sociale en Culturele Psychologie aan KU Leuven. Voordat ze naar Leuven kwam, was ze verbonden aan Wake Forest University, University of Michigan, Stanford University en de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Mesquita is een internationaal erkende autoriteit op het gebied van culturele verschillen in emoties. Haar meest recente onderzoek richt zich op de rol van emoties in multiculturele samenlevingen. Zo bestudeert ze hoe emoties een hefboom zijn voor de inclusie van minderheidsjongeren in middelbare scholen, en voor de sociale en economische integratie van nieuwkomers (d.w.z. pas aangekomen immigranten). Mesquita is als adviseur opgetreden voor UNICEF en de WHO. Onlangs was ze lid van de kerngroep van wetenschappelijke adviseurs voor het Science and Ethics for Happiness and Well-being Project (SEH), een initiatief van het Vaticaan in samenwerking met het Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) van de VN.
